debated over the ages and varies from culture to culture. For our time and place, however, there is astonishing agreement about what constitutes scenic beauty. Over and over, visual preference surveys find that people value mountain views, forested land, meadow land, farmland, parks, gardens, views of water, historic neighborhoods, tree-lined streets, and the like as scenic. Their antithesis — scarred landscapes, asphalt parking lots, super highways, industrial wastelands, cookie-cutter suburban development, streets lined with huge, garish signs — people seem almost universally to disdain.
